Making Friends and Fitting In: A Tween’s Guide

Making Friends and Fitting In: A Tween’s Guide

Making friends can feel tricky sometimes. One day, it seems like everything is great, and the next, you’re wondering where you fit in. The truth is every tween goes through this at some point—even the ones who seem super confident.

How to Make Friends (Without Feeling Awkward)

  • Start with a smile. Sounds simple, right? But studies show that smiling makes you seem more approachable.
  • Find common interests. If you like the same music, games, or hobbies, it’s easier to connect.
  • Ask questions. People love talking about themselves! Try, ‘What’s your favorite show?’ or ‘What do you do for fun?’
  • Join activities. Clubs, sports, or after-school groups are great ways to meet people naturally.
  • Be yourself. Pretending to be someone you’re not just to fit in will make friendships feel exhausting.

Dealing with Friendship Drama

Friendships aren’t always smooth. If you’re feeling left out or there’s drama, try this:

  • Stay calm. Don’t respond with anger—give yourself time to think.
  • “Talk it out. If a friend hurts your feelings, say, “I felt upset when that happened. Can we talk?”
  • Know when to walk away. If someone makes you feel bad about yourself all the time, it’s okay to move on.

You don’t need a million friends—just a few good ones who treat you well. The best friendships happen when you’re real, kind, and open to new connections.
